Making a connection across the world!

Room 7 has shared with us some learning they have been doing about kids in Kenya. Niamh's mum works with a group called So They Can, who help displaced families in Kenya. They have built a school, a hospital, a farm and a home for kids without families. Room 6 have joined room 7 in writing to the kids at the school. They might be amazed that kids across the world are thinking and talking about them. Learning about the kids' situation in Kenya has also made us appreciate how lucky we are... Here is a link to the website we looked at this week:

Celebrating and Supporting Daffodil Day

WOW!
Raumati Beach School raised $866 in support of the Cancer Society's Daffodil Day.  We all came dressed in our spring finery and bought daffodils and tattoos from the stall on the front court.

Rooms 6 and 8 also had a visit from Zena, the Daffodil Dog.  She belongs to Janie who works for the Cancer Society.  Zena was joined by her friend, Nina, who was dressed like a daffodil!

Here are the recounts that room 6 wrote about Zena's visit...
We have been learning that a recount is a story that tells you about something that has happened.

The Olympics comes to RBS!!

We had a whole school Olympics games this week.  We were supposed to have it outside, but it's been raining so much that the ground was really muddy and it kept raining during the day.

We were in groups around the school with kids from other classes.  Each group had a country that they represented.  We came to school dressed in our country's colours.  This photo shows us all in our Olympic clothes.  It was lots of fun working with kids from all over the school.   Everyone helped to look after each other and the teachers said they were so proud of the way we had fun with people we didn't even know to start with!

There were so many fun activities - balloon balancing, paper aeroplane races, jump jam, parachute games.  Maybe they'll put some of these games in the real Olympics!!!

A tribute to Margaret Mahy

At the end of the week, we learned the sad news that famous NZ author, Margaret Mahy, had died.
We read some of her stories.  One of them was called Fantail, Fantail and we made fantail headbands with coloured feathers.
Mrs Keating's favourite story is The Lion in the Meadow.  She read it to us and we made amazing lion faces with paint and paper strips.  They are hanging up in the hallway.

We changed the words of the story too, "Mother, there is a big, roaring, yellow, whiskery lion at school!"  We thought of some other adjectives to describe the lion too...such as:  vegetarian (because he only eats apples), scared (of the dragon), friendly... you will see smiles on our lions' faces because they are friendly too.

We are sad that Margaret Mahy has died but we are glad we have so many fantastic stories to read - thank you, Margaret!

Matariki

It is the maori new year called Matariki.
We are having a disco in the hall to celebrate Matariki on Friday.
We are wearing mufti.  It is only for year 1s and 2s.
At the disco, we are going to dance from 2pm til 3pm.  We have made colourful Matariki decorations to make the hall pretty and beautiful.
We made stars and we wrote a story on the back about what we're thankful for, because Matariki is a time to celebrate all the good things in life.
We also made a cloak and we put feathers on the cloak.  We wrote something that we had learned about Matariki on the feathers and then we coloured them in.

Bye Daphne!

Our friend, Daphne, has moved to Wellington.
Daphne and her family moved to Raumati in January and joined our room 6 family at the start of the year.  It was fun getting to know Daphne and her family, and learning about their home in California.
We loved being your friend, Daphne, and we miss you a lot.
Thanks for being such a helpful, friendly, kind, funny classmate!

Good luck at your new school!

This week, we been reading a ghost story.  It is called "Number One".  We like it because it has cool patterns on the illustrations. That's a fancy word for the pictures!  The pictures are just black, grey and white.  You will have to come into our room to look at our Number One pictures.  We drew them with black pens (vivids) and then we painted them with black dye because it is night time.  Kara told us that this was the background.

We have also been practising our running.
This is cross country running.   We have been running up hills and down hills, up steps and down steps, round and round things, in and out and behind things.
We have been practising because next week, we are having a real cross country.  It is on the back field on Tuesday afternoon, if you would like to come and cheer us on!
We have been learning about being RESILIENT when we are running - you have keep trying, keep running and if you get tired, just do fast walking.  Don't give up, don't stop!

As a special fun treat, on Friday, we went to Weka Park with our buddy class.  We had lunch there and then we played.  We went on the playground and some people played soccer.  Loads of people joined in the soccer game.  We thought that later on, we could go back and have a special lunch, like maybe fish and chips!  MMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

Everything's gonna be all right!!

We were invited to join the older kids on Thursday:  they have been practising a dance for a competition for Asthma Awareness Week.

Here's a link to the dance on youtube - we practised a few times and then Matt filmed us.
It's a bit tricky, but see if you can spot any of us...

Ormie the Pig

We have been talking about one of our school vision qualities - resilience.  Our buddies helped us to understand that resilience means you don't give up if something is hard, you have to keep trying.

We watched this funny video about Ormie, who is a very resilient pig.  And funny too!!!

We hosted junior assembly today!

It was the first time we had been the host for assembly.
We had to stand up in front of all of Wharemauku and introduce the assembly items. We had a buddy to do it with and we had to speak into the microphone.
We chose the songs - we sang "singing in the rain" , "21" and the National Anthem.
We showed the children our popcorn work and some of us read our stories.

It was very good and fun but we were a bit shy because it was our first time ever.
Mrs Keating said that we were AWESOME!

Next time, when we host assembly, we won't be shy because now we know how to do it!

Giant Fun in room 6

We have been reading giant stories.  We read The Hungry Giant - he was very angry.  We thought of lots of other words to describe him...nuts....selfish...mean...evil...bad...naughty...impolite...bad-mannered...crazy.
The giant in The Smartest Giant in Town (by Julia Donaldson) was different!  He was good...kind...sharing...helpful...nice.

You are great WORD MASTERS room 6 - you can think up lots of interesting words to use!

Make sure you come in, to look at our paintings of giants!

Some games we've been enjoying at school on the computers

Crick Web - lots of fun activities

Discovery Time

Today, we started our Discovery Time sessions.  This is a bit like choosing time.  The teachers had lots of different activities set up in the classrooms and outside, and we worked with all of the kids in Wharemauku not just kids from room 6.  Today, lots of room 6 people went and played in the sandpit with the new sandpit toys.  Some people made castles in the sand.  Other people built things with the wooden blocks and with the boxes.  There were lots of other things to choose too, dress ups, play dough, lego, craft activities, painting, water play.

We talked about being INVOLVED - participating in the different activities, and choosing where we wanted to go.  All of the room 6 children got really involved today - after morning tea, we talked about the things we had done and wrote stories about today's Discovery Time.  You can read them in our writing books.

It was great fun and we can't wait until next week's Discovery Time.  Some of the activities will be the same and we're wondering what new things we can get involved in!

Our First Week

Wow, what a fun first week back at school!
We are all a little tired, particularly after lunch.  It's a bit hard getting used to being back at school all day!

We have been really busy - reading, writing, maths, games outside, music, art - all in our first week!
