A tribute to Margaret Mahy

At the end of the week, we learned the sad news that famous NZ author, Margaret Mahy, had died.
We read some of her stories.  One of them was called Fantail, Fantail and we made fantail headbands with coloured feathers.
Mrs Keating's favourite story is The Lion in the Meadow.  She read it to us and we made amazing lion faces with paint and paper strips.  They are hanging up in the hallway.

We changed the words of the story too, "Mother, there is a big, roaring, yellow, whiskery lion at school!"  We thought of some other adjectives to describe the lion too...such as:  vegetarian (because he only eats apples), scared (of the dragon), friendly... you will see smiles on our lions' faces because they are friendly too.

We are sad that Margaret Mahy has died but we are glad we have so many fantastic stories to read - thank you, Margaret!

Matariki

It is the maori new year called Matariki.
We are having a disco in the hall to celebrate Matariki on Friday.
We are wearing mufti.  It is only for year 1s and 2s.
At the disco, we are going to dance from 2pm til 3pm.  We have made colourful Matariki decorations to make the hall pretty and beautiful.
We made stars and we wrote a story on the back about what we're thankful for, because Matariki is a time to celebrate all the good things in life.
We also made a cloak and we put feathers on the cloak.  We wrote something that we had learned about Matariki on the feathers and then we coloured them in.

Bye Daphne!

Our friend, Daphne, has moved to Wellington.
Daphne and her family moved to Raumati in January and joined our room 6 family at the start of the year.  It was fun getting to know Daphne and her family, and learning about their home in California.
We loved being your friend, Daphne, and we miss you a lot.
Thanks for being such a helpful, friendly, kind, funny classmate!

Good luck at your new school!

This week, we been reading a ghost story.  It is called "Number One".  We like it because it has cool patterns on the illustrations. That's a fancy word for the pictures!  The pictures are just black, grey and white.  You will have to come into our room to look at our Number One pictures.  We drew them with black pens (vivids) and then we painted them with black dye because it is night time.  Kara told us that this was the background.

We have also been practising our running.
This is cross country running.   We have been running up hills and down hills, up steps and down steps, round and round things, in and out and behind things.
We have been practising because next week, we are having a real cross country.  It is on the back field on Tuesday afternoon, if you would like to come and cheer us on!
We have been learning about being RESILIENT when we are running - you have keep trying, keep running and if you get tired, just do fast walking.  Don't give up, don't stop!

As a special fun treat, on Friday, we went to Weka Park with our buddy class.  We had lunch there and then we played.  We went on the playground and some people played soccer.  Loads of people joined in the soccer game.  We thought that later on, we could go back and have a special lunch, like maybe fish and chips!  MMMMMMMM!!!!!!!

Everything's gonna be all right!!

We were invited to join the older kids on Thursday:  they have been practising a dance for a competition for Asthma Awareness Week.

Here's a link to the dance on youtube - we practised a few times and then Matt filmed us.
It's a bit tricky, but see if you can spot any of us...
